That’s right it is International Surfing Day (ISD) today! It is usually on the 21st June but with 2012 being a leap year it is on the 20th. That is right it is the solstice, so for you folk in the Southern Hemisphere it is you shortest day of the year (less light to surf) and for us in the Northern Hemisphere it means that after work we could still have a 3-hour session in broad daylight!
ISD as it is known today started was established in 2004 but closely mirrors World Surf Day which was started some 11 years prior to that. ISD has grown considerably over the years and is now celebrated worldwide! Most surfers know about it and try and find some way or other to celebrate it (often just an excuse to go surfing!).
What ISD is really about though is appreciating this amazing thing called surfing. Everyone will find their own way of doing this, but a lot of people use ISD as a day to rally the troops to clean the beaches or to create awareness for the environment, or waves that are being threatened by construction. Whatever the case it is really a day for surfers to come together and do something as a unit.
And last but not least it is a day to spread the love of surfing and get more people involved. The world will be a better place the more people surf, so get out there, get down to the beach today, help someone out in the water or take up a board for the first time and get a lesson. It is the right thing to do!!
