Overview

Get qualified as a ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor on this 2-day course in Cornwall. Must be combined with a valid lifeguarding award inorder to work as an instructor.

The ISA (International Surfing Association) award is the most widely accepted international standard for accreditation of coaches and instructors in the surf school industry both within the UK and worldwide. Our courses are run under licence from the ISA, Surfing’s World Governing Body.

The ISA Level 1 is the minimum requirement and industry standard to work as a surf instructor in a surf school, surf camp, club or college.

What to Expect

This internationally recognised qualification allows you to coach beginner and intermediate level surfers. The program develops an individuals skill level and knowledge base, covering a range of modules. A range of different approaches are involved in coaching and instructing all our trainee coaches. It must be combined with a valid lifeguard course in order to work as a surf instructor, such as the full ‘SLSGB Surf Lifeguard’ award which allows you work as an instructor as well as a lifeguard, or the shorter ‘Surf Coach Saftey & Rescue Award’ if you only wish to work as a surf instructor

After taking this course, you will need to gain 20 hours surf coach shaddowing experience (equal to about 10 surf lessons). Depending on lesson bookings, we are able to offer this at our surf school in Perranporth. The membership to ISA will be valid for a year, after this you will need to pay your annual membership directly to ISA.

You simply pay your ISA membership fee every year, directly to the ISA via their website. If you forget to do this, then you may need to take the course again (about £300 for ISA course only).

After you take your ISA Level 1 training course, you're required to gain 20 hours surf coach shaddowing experience at a surf school (this is equal to around 10 surf lessons). This is unpaid shaddowing experience where you learn from experienced instructors carrying out lessons for paying guests, afterwards you fill in all the paperwork with your instructor and send it off to ISA to gain your full membership. You can do this at any surf school, we always try to accommodate at our Ticket to Ride Surf School in Perranporth, Cornwall. Just as the team and we can schedule this in.

You will need to bring your own surf equipment: surfboard, wetsuit, boots etc if it's cold! Also bring some lunch or cash, waterbottle, suncream if required, a towel, warm change of clothes, as well as pen and paper. All course learning material will be provided on arrival.
