Durban also marked the business end of the trip for us as it would be the location for our final surf instructors assessment which we had been building towards, we’d have to implement practically everything we had learnt over the whole trip. To attain the surf instructor’s assessment we’d all have to complete two different assessments, one Lifeguard and First Aid training course and a Surf lesson assessment where we’d do beginners lessons on one another plus an assessment on our actual surfing ability.

Everybody was most anxious about the Lifeguard assessment as one of the main requirements was that we were able to swim 400m in under 9 minutes, its sounds a lot simpler than it actually is and prior to the day of the assessment only 3 out of the 10 of us had managed to complete the task in the allotted time. However on the day almost everybody managed to do it with an impressive effort and the others were given another opportunity where they too managed to complete the swim. Now that the hard part was over we spent a few days in the classroom learning about essential beach safety and life saving drills including the Spinal Board for neck injuries and CPR procedure. We then took to the sea to practically test our abilities doing rescues on one another using the different kinds of Lifesaving equipment. At the end of everything we had all managed to pass both the Surfing and Life saving assessments and we all celebrated accordingly.

A special thanks needs to go out to Deon who helped us tremendously with the Life saving and Chris Bond for our Surf Instructor lessons.
