Katie Blundell (now Jonas) is an ex-pro freestyle snowboarder from Devon, UK  who took her snowboarding around the World for over two decades until she became a Mum in 2015. Here’s the skinny from a seasoned Vet:

When did you first start snowboarding and how did you get into it?

I “dabbled” in snowboarding on my first season (I was a skier!), but I was terrible. It wasn’t  until after uni that I got into it properly and did it full time. It was my season fling (now husband) that got me hooked. He was an instructor at the time and took me under his wing.

What do you make sure is always on you when you ride?

I always make sure I have snacks and music on the mountain. Normally some sort of energy bar and then a playlist of my favourite tunes. NB: NEVER take a banana in your pocket when you go riding

Favourite place to snowboard:

I’ve snowboarded in so many amazing places but my favourite place is Australia! Just such a chilled Aussie vibe and always good banter. Also Tignes, it’s like my second home and where it all began.

Favourite riding tune:

My favourite riding tune is a random one but I love Jolene by Dolly Parton. It just makes me happy 🙂

Who is your snowboarding hero and why?

My snowboard hero from the very start has always been Jenny Jones. She was my inspiration when I was learning and still is. Also in more recent years I REALLY admire mums who ride. Pretty hardcore juggling motherhood and snowboarding. My favourite is Maria Thompson who lives in Whistler.

What are your snowboarding goals for the next 5 years?

In the next 5 years I want to figure out how to get riding more, maybe relocate to the mountains one day to bring up my family. Also focus on setting up some girls riding camps. I’d like to try split boarding and get back into the terrain park 🙂 Also to get my son riding would be pretty cool (he’s 2)

One word of advice for anyone thinking of trying out snowboarding?

Don’t put pressure on yourself, go at your own pace and most of all make sure you’re having fun.
