South Africa is one of the most beautiful countries you could ever visit, and for a number of reasons too. The reason we’re here though, is surfing. As a surfing destination it is world class with 100’s of miles of coastline spanning two oceans. We’re embarking on a 10 week journey up it’s east coast, learning as we go, with the aim of becoming an ISA accredited Surf Instructor.

We’ve started in Cape Town and it’s quite an experience on the first day. 22 strangers from all corners of the globe meet for the first time and are thrown head first into this wonderful experience together. We got started right away with the surfing to asses everybody’s skill levels. Wether you’re an all out waterman/lady or you’ve never seen the sea before we start out with the basics and give everybody a thorough introduction to surfing. Since then we’ve gone on to experience a few different waves and condition types with the group putting in the hard work and taking on every challenge with good success so far.

So the goal is to become surf instructors, to do this the group have to complete a couple of different tasks, one of these forms part of the lifeguarding criteria and which over the years has proven to be one of the most challenging for groups. You have to complete a 400m pool swim sub 9minutes. We got training right away to help be best prepared for this assessment later on. The fitness element of surfing is often one which people under-estimate.

South Africa has a fascinating history with a rich heritage and culture, we stopped by the slave lodge to learn more about the Cape Town region and its involvement in the slave trade.

What would a trip to Cape Town be without visiting the famous Table Mountain which is now one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. Again with training for the Surf Instructor Course in mind we add in the fitness element of hiking up. It is quite a steep climb but the hard work was well worth the views on a beautiful day in the Mother City.

It’s been a great first week and trip so far as we all get to know each other a bit better and settle in. There’s been plenty happening on the social scene and plenty good vibes at our home on the Muizenberg beach front too. Shout out to African Soul Surfer for hosting us so well once again.

We’ve got a great bunch of guys for this trip and we’re building a solid foundation for life long memories and friendships. Check in weekly for updates on our journey here.

Cheers
