Rebekah Kellow joined the 10 Week Sri Lanka Surf Academy in 2022 and to say it changed her life is an understatement:
“At 54 years old, overweight and not very sporty, I took a sabbatical from my job and signed up for the 10-week surf instructor course in Sri Lanka. It was daunting, especially being surrounded by 20-somethings, but I’d been dreaming of this for years and I had a burning passion to breakdown barriers and stereotypes around what a surfer looks like.
It was the most incredible experience and now some of my proudest moments in my life are wearing the instructor uniform, running all women’s surf sessions, and working alongside my son who also completed the Ticket to Ride Sri Lanka Surf Academy.
Fast forward a couple of years and after buying a piece of land in Arugam Bay, I have co-founded Wanderlust Surf camp with the incredible Kutty, experienced surf instructor and we are teaching guests from all over the world how to surf and hopefully inspiring other women to believe that they too can enjoy feeling vibrant, alive and sexy in the surf at any age, shape or size.
This morning, a young woman in her 20s came up to me and said: “You’re surfing SO well.” and it’s comments like that make me feel so proud that I never gave up.
Since starting this journey, I’ve worked alongside 16–25 year-olds and I always been accepted as an equal and was able to do the job at the same level as them.
Turns out, the only person I needed to prove it to – was me.”
