Plett, braai’s surf and cats
Plettenberg Bay is on the ‘Garden Route’ which is a beautiful stretch of coastline leading away from Cape Town up our East Coast. It really is spectacular and just the setting is breathtaking never mind the perfect weather. Throw in great waves with no one out and lets just say Plett was pretty good.
The drive went without incident and we arrived happily in Plett to enjoy our first proper Braai (barbecue) of the trip. As with any braai in South Africa we had boerewors as well as other meat and some potatoes and butternut thrown in for good measure. Butternut done on the coals wrapped in tin-foil is exceptional if done well.
The next day we had our first surf in Plett. New place, new waves and new coaches meant for an exciting yet challenging session. The waves were absolutely perfect but with all these new elements it took the group a while to get into the groove. The waves were more powerful and broke much faster creating a whole new challenge. What was so great though, was how the surfing improved while we were in Plett from struggling in that first session to absolutely dominating very similar (more difficult in fact) conditions just a week later! Everyone is doing really well and pushing themselves hard which is great to see and to be a part of.
Of course you can't surf all day every day so we did a few other things to keep ourselves busy. One of those was going to a cat sanctuary where they look after and have all sorts of cats. Remembering we are in Africa I don't mean the pets, I mean leopard, cheetahs, caracal, african wild cat, servals and others, as well as some meerkat. Of course they are not in the wild (not a safari game reserve) but it is a far cry from a zoo too and it is really special to be able to get so close to these animals, knowing the majority of them could kill and eat you in a second if in the wild!
You will have to wait for the next blog to see the other more crazy things we did whilst in Plett i.e. bungy jumping and sky diving!!
Have a browse through the photos and check in soon for some interviews.
