Welcome to our exciting Cape Town surf camp and stop 1 on the African road trip. Cape Town really does offer it all, and despite being mid-winter the group have been having an amazing time. South Africans, and Capetonians especially, love to show visitors our home and anyone who comes here for any length of time always wants to come back.

I am sure this is true of many places in the world, but in Cape Town and South Africa it feels that any length of time to come here to “see it all” will never be enough. There are so many layers of different experiences to be had here from the obvious and famous ones like climbing table mountain, going wine tasting, seeing the penguins, to having a braai with friends, going walking in the mountains, surfing a secret spot and of course starting to tap into the culture over here. From 10 days to 10 weeks you may always want more, but here at Ticket to Ride we put our utmost into maximising your experience so that you get a real feel for what makes South Africa so special to us.

With the focus on surfing on our trips we did our first surf lesson on the same day that the group flew in. It was a perfect sunny day in Cape Town and the waves were clean two foot. We had a mix of ability levels from Jack who has done lots of surfing to Gill who had just done a weeks lessons a while before, but they all did really well and were up and riding and making the most of the great conditions. We went straight from that into a braai (South African version of a barbecue), and then of course a well deserved sleep!

Over the next few days we surfed and surfed and surfed, went to a local food market, braai'd some more, and on Sunday had our first surf at one of Cape Town's other surf spots, Big Bay. Being on a peninsula means that its always offshore in Cape Town, and to top it off there is always swell somewhere, so each day the trip leaders look at the charts and choose the best spot for the day. Being winter has meant that we have been fortunate to have great waves at Muizenberg which is a short five minute walk from where we are staying.

Enjoy the photos and ckeck back soon for more of what we have been up to.
