During the Autumn months of September – October and spring months of April – June, the Algarve in Portugal is a paradise for Surfers. With two coastlines facing completely different directions (giving you the options in pretty much every wind direction) the chances of finding decent waves in this region of Portugal at that time of year are almost a dead cert.

The west coast is a wild, unspoilt area potected from development because its a National Park. Here you'll find bay after bay of west facing punchy beach breaks with the odd point and reef thrown into the mix as well. With cranking beachies and huge cliffs to look at as you're racing down the line it almost feels a bit like Cornwall on steriods. Let's not forget about the south coast though as if the devil winds are howling on the west coast you then have endless offshore options to choose from. You'll have everything on the south coast from mellow beach breaks to thumping barrels.

To add to the array of world class waves on offer, the water in Autumn/Spring is around 20 degrees which means you'll be happy as larry in your 3.2 wetty and the weather averages out at pleasant 22-25 degrees.

A few things you need to know about Portugal….
  • Their most famous and successful Surfer is Tiago Pires. Esentially looked upon as their own David Beckham
  • "Ola" means hello, "Ciao" means goodbye and you'll hear the word "foders" if you drop in on people
  • Sagres and Superbock are the 2 main beers on offer
  • The Portugese make some of the worlds best Coffee "Delta Coffee"
  • Pastel de Natas are a must try in Portugal. The Nata plus Delta Coffee combo before a surf is a winner
  • The Portugese coastline holds the record for the Biggest Tow in Wave on Record at Nazare in Northern Portugal surferd by Garrett McNamara
