“I started the course as a total beginner surfer, now I’m working as a Surf Coach in Sri Lanka, whilst getting my Uni Degree online. Literally living my dream.”

Magnus Drue Knudsen

Firstly, to Magnus’s parents — our sincere apologies.

When Magnus joined the 10-Week Sri Lanka Surf Academy back in 2022, the plan was simple: gain some life experience, immerse himself in new cultures, meet new people, learn to surf, and qualify as a surf coach, all before heading off to university to study Maths.

Fast forward a few years, and things haven’t exactly gone to plan.

What Magnus woke up to this morning…

What was intended as a stepping stone to a summer job has evolved into a fulfilling and unexpected career. Magnus has spent multiple seasons with us in Sri Lanka as a Surf Coach, continually postponing his Maths degree as he followed a path he hadn’t imagined, but clearly loves.

His calm presence and rare patience in the water are qualities that can’t be taught. Combine that with the energy of youth, and you get someone who’s always in the ocean — coaching, surfing, and spreading the stoke throughout the Surf House.

After several seasons of what he calls “invaluable life experience” — discovering more about himself, his values, and what truly drives him, Magnus has decided it’s time to revisit his academic goals. But he’s doing it his own way. He’s carved out a unique path that allows him to study in the quiet tropical afternoons, while continuing to share his passion for surf coaching in a part-time role with our team in Sri Lanka.

We couldn’t be more proud of the journey he’s taken and the one he’s still riding.
