Coffee Bay is right in the heart of the Eastern Cape and the most rural of all our stops on this surf trip, it is probably also the most beautiful. For most it was an authentic African experience. We were based at the Coffee Shack Backpackers right along a coastline that consisted of long rolling hills, villages with mud huts and cattle free roaming almost everywhere we’d go.
We were greeted warmly upon arrival and we quickly acquainted ourselves with the bar and pool table after a lengthy 8 hour drive. We were also instantly informed of the house rules, BUFFALO! Which very simply means you don’t drink with your right hand ever or you will be called out and instructed to down (rapidly consume) what is left of your drink. It was great fun and created a little game for everybody in our down time.
When we weren’t surfing we were experiencing the beauty of Coffee Bay, exploring the coastline with our guides visiting the nearby caves and cliff jumps as well as a 10km walk to Hole In the Wall (a geological treat). We also got to spend an evening with a local Xhosa family in their mud hut eating their traditional food and beer while they sang and danced for us.
