Ansteys Beach

Welcome to Durban, South Africa’s “surf city”. Anstey’s sits on the Bluff, a well to do area just to the South of Durban’s main beaches. From our idyllic location perched just above the main beach you will have a view all the way down Anstey’s beach to the infamous barrels of Cave Rock. This is one of the most renowned surfing set-ups in South Africa and we will be right on top of it!

Anstey’s Backpackers is owned by South African surf Legend Rudi Palmboom. Rudi was one of the original chargers at Cave Rock and has made a reputation for himself as a fearless surfer who will take on anything the ocean can throw at him; he still receives a regular invite to the Big Wave Africa event held each year at Dungeon’s. Rudi is one of the most laid-back characters that we will meet on our trip and his passion for the beach and for the surf will be an inspiration as we begin the courses.

Like the Malherbe’s, the Palmboom’s represent the past and the future of South African surfing. Rudi’s son, Rudi Jnr, is one of SA's future stars and recently won the SA Junior’s at J-Bay. Rudi’s daughter Heidi Palmboom is also one of SA’s most promising young female surfers. Once you have seen the quality and consistency of the waves at Anstey’s, it is hardly surprising that Rudi and his family are at the very top of the South African surfing tree.

Anstey’s is a short drive or taxi from the City Centre and is an ideal location to take advantage of the quality waves and the other attractions offered by a cosmopolitan city.
Durban is also home to Clayton Surfboards and this is the time to trade in your old Clayton for a new, more progressive model or to order yourself up a new custom board to take your surfing to the next level and beyond
