Well the good news is that we are still alive! No, not because anything has happend but because it has taken some time to get this next blog up and running. There has been no lack of action on our little piece of paradise, just a slight lack of good internet facilities. But here we are!
Where do I begin, the first week in Canggu really did turn into a blur, as we literally got perfect 2-4ft waves every single day. In fact the one day we drove to another break was only to get a change of scenery, the waves were still cooking at our 'local' spot Old Mans. Just a short five minute walk from our resort we set about getting in two good surfs per day, every day. Shoulders were aching and eyes were red with the sting of salt water, but when the waves are that good you don't stop! Sam and Callum hadn't done much surfing before at all, while Matt has done quite a bit sporadically over the years and Mike and Elliott have done a bit of surfing.
Within 2 days everyone was doing really well and getting long rides at Old Mans. Old Mans is a great reefbreak peak, with a long running left and a shorter but easier right. With the bath warm water the surfs were frequently 2 or more hours long until the shoulders were stiff and arms could move no longer. Following this it was all about the amazing breakfast as the fresh fruit salad and choice of banana pancakes, omelette or local Nasi Goreng (chicken and veg refried rice) got gobbled down. After a bit of down time and loads of water it was back in the water to get some more long rides before the trade wind came up in the afternoon. Some evening we got an evening session in too.
After a week of doing this every day we really needed a break, and decided that hiking up a volcano was a good way to see something different. We woke up at 1:30 am to set off on the drive up to the volcano, arrived there at 4am where we started the walk up in the pitch black. The drive started with pouring rain which left some doubt as to whether we would see the sunrise we were hoping for. Luckily it wasn't raining on the walk and we were all in high spirits. It was an amazing walk and awesome to be up there, but unfortunely clouds prevailed and we only had short, yet magnificent, glimpses of our surrounding from the top of the crater. We rested near some holes in the ground where warm air from the volcano was used to boil our eggs and steam our bananas. It was a great experience all-around.
I have just been informed that the short window of time where they turn the internet on is coming to an end and thus so will this blog. There are many more pics to see and stories to tell, with huge waves and fun times. Check back in soon to join us on this adventure.
