Our second week in Muizenberg was an exciting one with great surf and many activities on the agenda. We got the week started with a hike up Cape Towns iconic Platteklip Gorge on what was unfortunately one of the hottest days of the summer, once we all summited one of the worlds natural wonders we enjoyed the view of the Cape Peninsula whilst sipping on a few much needed cold drinks. Fortunately for us we had the luxury of the cable car on the way down. Since it was such a lovely day I decided to take the guys on a spontaneous trip to my favourite beach in Cape Town, Llandudno, where we all got to cool off in the freezing cold Atlantic Ocean and enjoy the beauty of our surroundings.
We also got involved a bit with an outreach program in one of the nearby communities that struggle with poverty, drugs, gangs and violence. We joined Waves for Change for the afternoon in Khayelitsha (nearby informal settlement). Kids from these communities are encouraged and welcomed down to their facilities to partake in activities that distract and inspire ambitions away from gangs and violence. The main activity is surfing and boy do these kids love it! They were so happy to see us all as we unloaded our gear and they heard the news that we’d be helping them in their surf lesson for the day.
The surfing in Cape Town has been fantastic for everybody in the group, both beginners and those a little bit more experienced got to test themselves in some really fun and challenging waves. We were able to knock out 17 lessons in our two week stay (34hours of coaching) excluding the free surfing! We were really fortunate with the conditions our whole stay and it holds the group in good stead heading up the coast into more testing waves.
Our stay in Muizenberg has been a memorable one and our hosts at the African Soul Surfer Backpackers were so accommodating and hospitable and contributed greatly to the comfort and enjoyment of our whole stay. We’ve moved on up the coast now and are all looking forward to making many more memories together.
