The Coffee Shack is run by Dave Malherbe. Dave was drawn to the Transkei by stories of epic empty waves and a traditional society that embraces a slower pace of life. Dave is one of South Africa’s most successful competitive surfers and his list of achievements goes on and on. His enthusiasm for the sport and vast coaching experience rub off on every surfer lucky enough to spend time at his hostel.
The Coffee Shack is every travellers dream. Days turn into weeks and weeks to months, as travel plans are rapidly re-hashed to take in all that is on offer. The camp is made up of traditional huts set just back from a deserted beach. Large hammocks line the water’s edge and daily activities are arranged from coastal walks to cliff jumping, drum making and nights with local families. The Coffee Shack also plays an important role within the local community and has set up several initiatives to help local schools and families.
After a day’s surfing the empty waves right out front take a “Sundowner” and watch the sun set from an empty cliff-top with a cool beer. Then wake up the next morning and do it all over again.
