Durban means many things, warm water, fun waves, back to city life, but it also means time to sit in class and learn something new! Not everyone chooses to do the surf instructor course, but in this group the majority of the them did, most intent on spending the summer living the dream on the beach.
The courses aren’t easy, but are both very informative. The basic first aid skills learned should be included in any persons education, regardless of become a surf coach or lifeguard. And the water skills are essential in being able rescue someone in this playground we call the ocean. All in all the group participated fully and did really well.
Durban is more than just the courses though, we got some epic waves and the group were really stoked to be able to surf in just boardshorts or bikinis. The one day on the Bluff was absolutely cooking, with clean water and good size sets. Phoebe getting the wave of the day was a highlight.
Up in Ballito we did some extra activities which are included in the trip, like riding the flowrider and going on safari. The flowrider was non-stop fun and laughter. Safari is one of those things you just have to do if you go to Africa. Getting to see wild animals in their natural environments is something to be treasured. Huge elephant and rhino up close and personal were highlights of the day.
And then suddenly it was over, 10 weeks had flown by and the South Africa trip had come to an end. Seeing four of our group leaving was heartbreaking, they had become a part of our family. We had a great last night though to celebrate all together, and reminisce on this incredible trip.
It’s off to Mozambique now, for a new trip and a different experience all together!
To those who left, thank you so much for what you brought to this incredible trip. You are sorely missed.
Keep smiling,
Luke
