Hi all and welcome to Anstey’s in Durban
The past few days have been a hive o activity as the group get settled into their new surroundings in the city.
On Sunday we enjoyed our first real taste of solid Durban waves as a fresh easterly swell hit in the morning. The wind held up for most of the day, so we were able to surf until lunchtime. It was a perfect introduction to the Surf City.
Later on, after lunch, I took the guys out for a brief tour of Durban. It was great for me to see all the familiar beaches and breaks and give the guys a few stories about how life in Durban can be. Along the way we stopped at the ever-popular ice rink and let loose. Despite being the oldest guys on the rink, we were by no means going to let that stop us from acting like kids again. We spent hours racing around the ice, playing tag and throwing snowballs around. It was great and by the time we decided to head back to the van, we were exhausted.
Monday saw the arrival of Dene Botha from Surfing South Africa (SSA) and the start o the much-anticipated coaching courses. Fortunately for the group, the wind was horribly onshore so they were able to concentrate on the course without being distracted by thoughts of a surf.
So far the guys have been working hard, practicing their ABC lesson formats and writing assessments on what they’ve learned. Yesterday the guys gave their talk topics. Jill and I were most impressed by the high level of the group’s lectures and I’m sure it’s going to reflect in the marks.
Today the group starts with part 2 of the courses, the Surf Saver Awards. As part of this course, the guys will learn about CPR and hazard management and then complete a number of physical tests in order to become qualified. So far so good, but there’s still plenty more to go, so till next time…
