You may be asking the question of what we get up to when the waves are flat? Whilst surfing is obviously the main focus on the trip, we always try and find other things to do. One big one is trying to help out in the community wherever possible, sometimes there is more opportunity for it than others and waves also of course have a role in how much time we spend in the water and doing other things.
On this trip we spent a day helping out a local creche. The owner built the creche up from a small shed in her backyard and now has over 30 children who are being well cared for there. We have been back several times over the past year with different groups doing various things, including putting up a gate, digging a sand pit and helping make it windproof inside. This time the main problem was the driveway, which when it rained turned into a muddy area where no one could walk. We brought in stones and rubble from various places and set to laying it flat. The group did a great job and it rained the very next day so at least our work could be put to test immediately!
Other flat day fun in Jeffreys Bay included a trip to the waterfall. This is a fun little trip as not many people know about it, even locals as well as people like trip leader Chad who has been going to J-Bay for years to surf. The woman at the gate warned us that the water was flowing really strongly and to be careful. Having been there many times I felt it was worth having a look. It was definitely flowing more than I have ever seen, but it had subsided considerably from what the woman described three days previous. The waterfall is just a great place to 'chill out' for a few hours. The sun was shining and it is well protected from any wind. There is a fun zipline and a few rock jumps to entertain those more adventurous. Have a look at the photos to see more.
Check back in tomorrow for the king of the jungle!!
