Kicking off the Year in Cape Town, South Africa

10 years ago in Gap Year

We start our 2016 surf season back where it all began for Ticket to Ride, in the beautiful South Africa.

It’s a new year with new experiences for the lucky 16 who managed to join us in South Africa, and with the new year comes new aspirations for these few who hope to become fully fledged surfers and Surf Instructors after 10 weeks of learning and travelling along South Africa’s sunny and beautiful East Coast.

We’ll be stopping in 6 unique and wonderful places during our travels up the coast, Cape Town, Plettenberg Bay, Jeffreys Bay, East London, Coffee Bay and Durban. Each stop offers a unique feel as the country is as diverse in landscape as it is in culture and we hope to experience each and every stop to it’s fullest in what I’ve come to know and witness as an incredible life changing experience for all involved in the trip. So be sure to track us on Facebook and Instagram  or follow us right here through our blog posts as we make our way up the coast.

For now we’re in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Cape Town. Our first stop is also conveniently home to arguably the best beginner wave in the world which is great for our crew who are majority novices. The beach is called Muizenberg and we’re a stones throw away from the waters edge and able to make the most of the beginner friendly wave to really set in stone the fundamentals of surfing. In the water we have access to some of the best coaching in the country with Chris Bond and Nikita Robb at the helm, our Trip Leader, overall head coach and Quiksilver team rider Jarred Veldhuis will be leading the crew in and out of the water over the next 10 weeks along with myself.

We’re well underway already here in Cape Town, South Africa, having already clocked in 4 surf sessions this weekend. Everybody is up, riding and showing promise in their surfing, Im excited to see how everybody improves as we progress up the coast.

We have a busy week ahead with a packed agenda of fun filled activities in and out of the water, but for now we’re all settled into South Africa and excited for the journey that lays ahead of us. All the best for the week ahead to every one of you, wherever you may be in the world. I hope you have as much fun as we do.

Till next time (Shakka’s) 🙂
