Georgie Timson has been surfing since moving to Cornwall. Her three brothers inspired her in the water on a daily basis and dad Vince, (respectable top level surf coach) encouraged her further. She’s notched up some great results on the British surfing circuit, winning the Fistral Beach Night Surf in 2015 and taking second place last year.

Georgie loves to travel and live outdoors, which makes her a perfect Ticket to Ride Ambassador. I caught up with Georgie for a short interview whilst we were both out in Lombok, Indonesia earlier this month.

Pros and cons of being a girl surfer

Pros:

You get to be in the water everyday.

Surfing is the best workout, so you keep super fit without realising; the paddling, the pop up and being on the wave.

Wanderlust. Traveling is one of the best things being a surfer, such an enriching experience, with lots of surfers are embracing this truth. You get so immersed into surfing, you will 100% want to travel  to wherever there is a wave to catch.

Cons:

I think a lot of people assume if they see a girl in the line up who is half attractive think maybe they can drop in or take waves but it’s funny when you see girls shred and charge harder than some of the boys out there!

One thing when I’m away travelling and I can never get it out of my head are sharks and I’m sure you’d be scared if you saw two fins coming towards you! It can’t be a girl thing.

I really think there are no cons if you’re doing it for pleasure, unless maybe you ‘over do’ it. I struggle to find that would be possible though haha.

Top travel tip for solo female

Research your destination before you leave, trust your gut, be aware of your surroundings at all times and don’t be intimidated.

Favourite wave EVER

Easy. Lakey Peak, Sumbawa, Indonesia. There’s also loads of sick waves in the area. Soooo good.

Morning routine

Check the surf (I live about 2 minutes from the beach so it’s pretty easy). Grab a snack and a coffee then go and surf. The simple life.

I couldn’t live without…

My surfboard of course!

Top tip for any girls wanting to get into surfing but feel intimidated

Just do it! Go to a good surf school, have a weeks worth of lessons, then either buy a board or hire one and surf as much as possible and before you know it you’ll be smoking the boys out of the water.
