An orphanage in Tapachula, Mexico, is challenging you to jump on your surfboards and join a ‘Mexican Wave’ to help raise much needed funds for its surf-chasing children.
The charity, Misión México, not only offers a loving home to disadvantaged children, but it introduces them to surfing to help them find confidence and love life again. And they need your help – to join their global Mexican wave, by doing what you do best: surfing.
The wave campaign is timed around International Surfing Day on Thursday 20 June and all weekend (until 23 June), and to join the wave, you can:
– Share your surf skills by organising a surf event – involve your local surf club or surfing friends and donate the entry fees. If you’re already part of a surfing event on 20 June, encourage the organisers to fundraise for Misión México.
– Film a silly Mexican wave with your friends, colleagues or family and share on social media using #MexicanWave. Get creative and do a group wave on the beach, at work, or on the actual waves! The kids in Tapachula have already done their wave (warning: that video is unbelievably cute).
– Buy our surfing hoodies or the orphanage documentary Somewhere Near Tapachula, which focuses on how the children’s love of surfing helps give them hope again.
– Give a free lesson to people who have never surfed before, encouraging everyone to use My Donate or EveryDay Hero to help you fundraise.
– Ask your local surf schools/shops to donate to Misión México through wetsuit/board hire – or have our donation tins on display.
– Organise a screening of their award winning documentary Somewhere Near Tapachula film at your school, church, cinema, workplace or even at your home and ask for donations. You could serve up nachos and Coronas to give it a real Mexican Wave flavour.
Contact Mision Mexico and let them know what you’re planning to do, when and where. Let them know if you need any promotional materials, such as their logo and brochures.
But the charity isn’t just asking everyone else; they’re giving it a go themselves. That’s right, the Misión México (UK) Trustees are having their first ever lesson in Cornwall with UK Pro Surfer Andrew Cotton, sponsored by Ticket to Ride Surf School, Perranporth and Hurley.
They are also hosting a fundraising event at Seniers Hotel in Perranporth on Sunday 30 June where they will be screening the award winning documentary Somewhere Near Tapachula. If you'd like to join us just get in touch!
