The highlight of 2016 for me has to be my trip to South Africa with the vibe-creator himself, Max Hepworth-Povey. We were there to visit the latest group of Riders who were touching down in Cape Town to begin their 13 week adventure up to Mozambique. We were also joined by Jane, a travel journalist from The Guardian, and for the next 10-days – our road trip buddy!
Cape Town is an incredible part of the world, and with TTRide legend Chris Bond as our tour guide, we were able to see parts of the region that would have been impossible to discover and appreciate as a slightly lost tourist. Highlights have to include surfing with Luke, Jared and the TTRide group in Muizenberg, catching up with Tim Conibear at Waves for Change, and the incredible food and views at Cape Point Vineyards food market.
But the biggest highlight has to be surfing with Chris and Max at Kitchen Windows (J-Bay) 9 days on from Cape Town with some decent miles and exploring under our belts. It was a really misty day and once we paddled out you couldn’t see beach, or even the waves approaching! It was a rare experience to be alone in a line up with your mates. I watched the boys get some really fun waves and with the encouragement of Bondy I caught the biggest (for me!) and funnest wave I’d had in a long time. I was loving it so much that I left it pretty late to bail off before the rocks.. meaning you have to painfully get in over the reef, but it was worth it. Then straight to the legendary Island Vibe bar to celebrate the end of our epic road trip!
