Road Diary South Africa | Learning to Surf

We’re back in South Africa with a shorter 6 week mid-year trip which isn’t actually that much different to our regular 10-13 week trips. We basically compress all the goodness of the longer trips into one super awesome road trip up the picturesque South African coast. Being winter in South Africa means its the best time of year for swell and favourable winds of which we’ve already reaped reward so far. South Africa is a top Surf destination no matter what your level of surfing is, there is literally something for everybody on this coastline and over the next 6 weeks we aim to see and surf as much of it as possible. We start in Cape Town at the ever popular Muizenberg beach, well regarded as the best beginner wave around.

We’re a small crew of only 3 riders for this one and so far its been non-stop surfing. Nearly all of them have had little to no prior experience to surfing so its been a week of fundamentals and learning for the crew guided by the ever wise and inspirational Jarred Veldhuis who is our head coach whilst in Cape Town. As we move up the coast from stop to stop the guys will be getting coached by some of the most well known and respected coaches in the country to try and maximise their potential in surfing during the 6 weeks.

The guys have gotten on really well in the water and are all up and riding, right now its about getting all the fundamentals down to equip them with the essentials needed to make the most of the waves to come as we head up the coast, all of which are technically unique and challenging and by the end of the trip they should all be well rounded independent surfers that are very capable.

It wouldn’t be a road trip if we didn’t clock a few miles in the car exploring one of the most beautiful cities in the world, while on the hunt for waves of course. Cape Town is the meeting place for the Atlantic and Indian Ocean leaving us with two coastlines to explore and a great chance of finding a wave regardless of wind direction as its always off-shore somewhere unlike when we’re on the East coast on our travels where we will be relying on westerly winds for the most part. Man does Cape Town have a few postcard worthy views!
