Secret Sumatra Wave Guide

What are the waves like on the Secret Sumatra Trip and is this trip right for you?

The base for our ‘Secret Sumatra’ trip is close to a number of quality intermediate level waves, including an A-frame peak, a long mellow left, some hollow rights, beachies, basically everything on offer to help rapidly improve your surfing. But are these waves right for you? Are you going to get smashed?

Firstly let’s look at what we are calling an intermediate surfer as this is a very broad spectrum. If you’re reading this you will have most likely have surfed with us in Sri Lanka or Indonesia before. If so imagine waves with a more punch than in Sri Lanka, similar to what’s on offer in Lombok on the Island Hopping Tour of Indonesia.

To get the most out of this trip you will need to be honest about your surfing.

You will be more in the intermediate to advanced category, catching most of the waves you paddle for, consistently turning and riding across them, nailing basic moves like little cutbacks and small floaters. You might still eat it on steep take offs, confidence may be lacking in the bigger surf and you might struggle to generate speed but you are aware of these flaws and this is what you want to work on.

If that’s you, then let’s look at the waves. A little bit of research and you can find exactly where these are but I’m going to be respectful and not name them to help play our part in not blowing up this spot.

Wave 1.

The ultimate A Frame peak 5 minutes away. Very consistent, nice walls, yet also hollow sections potentially offering your first ever barrel over comfy weed covered reef. The right has a big channel creating an easy paddle out (and a little rest stop!)

Wave 2.

Super consistent peeling left hander that has a very easy take off and long crumbly wave that peels for ages. No tube sections, but a sloping shoulder meaning if you bog a turn, you’ll be forgiven and get to try again.

Wave 3

A relaxing take off into a proper down the line wave, with carvable walls to lay into and barrel sections. If generating speed is something you want to work on this wave will have you flying.

Wave 4

This right hand reef break and left which runs onto the beach is close to the resort, with the right offering tubes pictured above and a more playful left. We are normally the only ones out here.

Wave 5.

Bit of a mission to get to this punchy left, but a beautiful journey (about 45 mins) Dickies is at the end of a scenic 45 minute journey by bike. The reef is shallow but the barrel is pretty easy, we would only take the more advanced intermediate surfers here.

Wave 6.

Another left and right setup with the right offer a thick tube as pictured above and left hand point with runs for a while, with less tubes on offer but still shallow reef. A swell magnet so if it’s small we’ll head here, just bring some booties!

Wave 7.

This spot is for the advanced surfers of the group as deep water swell breaks over a shallow reef creating a powerful picture perfect right hander, like the one pictured above. If you take the trip here and it’s too daunting, the reef is great for snorkeling and spear fishing!

The location of this stretch of coast is unique as it picks up more swell than most of it’s Indonesian neighbours, but if the swell is too big we can always find a smaller corner to surf and if it’s a small swell, we have the exposed spots to make the most of. Also being just 3 degrees north of the Equator means weather conditions are favourable for clean waves.

So in summary you are looking at some serious surf to push yourself in and we will encourage your progression, but in a safe way as each day we will split up into two groups and take you to the spots suitable for you.

Are you ready?

Let’s go.
