Week four of our South African Road Trip has been another action packed week for everybody. Here in Jeffreys Bay, surfing is the order of the day, everyday, due to the quality and consistency of the waves. That said, we did vary it up this week and left our little nest at Island Vibe for a few fun group activities:
It wasn’t quite a safari but we did manage to go and have a look at some of Africa’s adored wildlife at a nearby lion park. After all, it wouldn’t be a South African Road Trip if we didn’t see some lions!
We also made the most of the good weather we’ve been having. Despite it being winter here, I’ve had colder stays in Jeffreys Bay during our summer trips! We used the weather to our advantage and visited a river on a surrounding area farm. There, we had a chance to swim, do a few rock jumps and zip-line across the river.
Yet of course, surfing is the main focus of our South African Road Trip. Being in Jeffrey’s Bay means being immersed in South African surf culture- everywhere you go seems to be ‘Surf themed’. We visited a man who’s played a huge roll in the development of the Surf culture in Jeffrey’s Bay through shaping; Mikey Meyer. While not as old as he pretends to be, his stories and wisdom account for many years in Jeffreys Bay. We enjoyed his stories and his wicked sense of humour as he gave us the low down on hand-shaping surfboards.
As if it weren’t a busy enough week, one morning we also decided to do our own little beach clean up where we were staying. It was amazing to see how much rubbish makes it’s way to our beaches. We then got involved with a recycling project in a nearby township to support the initiative and do our bit to contribute to a cleaner environment.
Jeffrey’s Bay is a regular favourite stop on the South African Road Trip, but this particular week was one of my all-time favourites. We had the waves, the weather, and a few wild nights in the Island Vibe bar. But most importantly we had the great vibes that come with community! Did I mention we got the waves??
Oh, and before I forget, Gwil the talented and charismatic (also significantly older, happy birthday bro!) Welshman got all these great shots!
To top of our amazing stay we went live on Facebook from our accommodation on the beach and had a chat with everybody about their trips so far. You can check it out on our Facebook page.
Cheers everybody!
