We were packed and ready to go early Friday morning. We were once again on the road, this time to the world famous waves of Jeffreys Bay. On the drive there are many activities that bring people from all over the world to see. We decided to stop at Monkeyland, it has 13 different species of monkeys and was loads of fun.
On our arrival in J-bay, we went past the factory stores and surf shops, which always have specials and great deals on hand. In J-bay we stay at Island vibe, its a beautiful back packers situated on the beach right in front of two really good waves. The weekends are really busy at Island vibe. We mingled with the crowds and made new friends before the weekend started.
The weekend was pretty relaxed, as there was a surf contest on at kitchen windows where we surf and is a stone throw away from our rooms. I took some time to hear from Gregor Campbell (Scotsman) how he's finding Jeffreys bay:
Gregor: “We are halfway through our stay in J-bay. Its been a great experience so far and it is sure to get even better as we still have activities to do, such as the bungy jump and some volunteer work with the Supertubes foundation. We have mostly been surfing at Kitchen windows, which is less than a minute’s walk from Island Vibe backpackers.
Kitchen windows is a reef break that gives a great ride to the right and a slightly shorter left. This is the first time we have surfed a reef break on the trip and it provides some excellent waves that allows the beginners in the group to practice their skills and gain experience in the bigger waves. The more advanced members of the group also seem to be having a great time with a few trying to get some cut backs on the waves. Our surf coach in J-bay is Etienne Venter who is a South African junior surf team coach. He has given us great advice and everyone has benefited from his lessons in some way.
“We have done some extra activities whilst we have been in J-bay. A few of us went sand boarding, which was a fair challenge, but everyone did really well for their first time. The one morning we had a group yoga session. It was harder than it sounded and we did it on the beach. Nikita explained that it should help with our balance and flexibility, which will benefit our surfing.
“The group was also treated to a trip to see Mikey Meyers surfboard factory. We all learned a lot about how a surfboard is made and about all the dedicated work involved in the process of it. J-bay has been amazing and the entire group is buzzing for the last surf lessons. Everybody has improved and we have all gained knowledge that will be useful when we take on bigger and more challenging waves later on in the trip.”
Till the next week in J-bay
