“When I Close My Eyes I Still See That Wave in Slow-motion”

Ticket To Ride

8 hours ago in Gap Year

Following on from Rebekah’s blog about how the Sri Lanka Surf Academy, we checked in with her fellow student on the course, spritely teenager Carina Volland who also joined with no surfing experience. Here’s was Carina had to say and what she’s up to now:

“I will never forget the morning when we surfed main point (Arugam Bay) and surfing the longest wave of my life all the way to the beach. When I close my eyes I still see that wave in slow-motion.”

After the Sri Lanka Surf Academy Carina completed her 20 hours shadowing with us at the Sri Lanka Surf House and gained further experience volunteering at Seasisters, a local initiative to teach Sri Lankan females ocean awareness through swimming and surfing that challenge cultural norms and encourage a new perspective in life.

Now ripping and feeling confident in the water, Carina signed up for a Women’s Open surf competition where she placed third in the shortboard category. Now she is earning her money working full time as a surf coach in Lanzarote.

“which is a dream come true and none of this would have happened if I didn’t sign up to the Ticket to Ride Sri Lanka Surf Academy.”

Another Zero to Hero story for Carina.

If her and Rebekah can make their surfing dream a reality then you can to! Take a look at the next 10 Week Instructor Courses happening in Sri Lanka here and South Africa here.
