{"id":20647,"date":"2017-05-23T00:02:37","date_gmt":"2017-05-23T00:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.tickettoridegroup.com\/?p=20647"},"modified":"2025-10-17T18:34:32","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T18:34:32","slug":"the-lowdown-ricky-bobby-basnett","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/the-lowdown-ricky-bobby-basnett\/","title":{"rendered":"The Lowdown &#8211; Ricky &#8220;Bobby&#8221; Basnett"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was privileged to have been able to grow up watching former WSL campaigner, Ricky Basnett surf.<\/p>\n<p>Ricky grew up surfing his \u201cback yard\u201d the Bluff, with the likes of Rudy Palmboom, Senior and Junior, former WQS Campaigners Paul and Matthew Daniels, and of course&#8230; Myself. He is well known for his innovative airs, incredible\u00a0carves\u00a0and better yet, his stylish barrel riding skills. He made his mark on the competitive surf game way back when he was 17! \u00a0He finishing 2nd in the world at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isasurf.org\/events\/isa-world-junior-surfing-championship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ISA World Junior <\/a>Champs of that year and later went on to win the <a href=\"http:\/\/theballitopro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr. Price Pro<\/a>, being the first South African to win it since <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shaun_Tomson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shaun Thompson<\/a>, 27 years prior.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly he has since hung up his competitive jersey and is now shaping mainly retro\/ experimental\u00a0surfboards in his new hometown of St Francis Bay.<\/p>\n<p>I caught up with the legend in the surf a couple of days ago and fired off some quick questions at the chap!<\/p>\n<p>This is what he had to say&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><b>Favourite wave<\/b><b> :<\/b> \u201cWithout a doubt, Cave Rock on the Bluff, and all day long baby!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Favourite Board<\/b><b>? :<\/b> \u201cMy Favourite board? I don&#8217;t really have a\u00a0favourite\u00a0board, I have been trying out many different weird and wonderful shapes and sizes lately. If I really had to choose, I would say I&#8217;m really loving my\u00a0\u201cTwinny\u201d\u00a0at the moment.\u00a0 I have been shaping a couple fun little ones (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rickbobbasnett\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shaka Sleds<\/a>) and love any old barn\/garage board I can get my hands on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>How long have you been surfing for<\/b><b>? :<\/b> \u201cI have been surfing for about 25 years now! What a\u00a0jol! (South African slang for a great time)\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Favourite quote<\/b><b>? :<\/b> \u201cMy favourite\u00a0quote would have to be from the movie\u00a0\u201cTalladega Nights\u201d &#8211; I wanna go fast! &#8211; Ricky Bobby\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>When traveling, what<\/b><b> is the one item you cannot go without? :<\/b> \u201cSunblock!
