Like most big payoffs there are a LOT of risks associated with venturing out of bounds. \u00a0Often, there is no one to pull you out of danger other than the crew you bring with you, so you better be prepared.<\/p>\n<p>Our Canadian\/NZ resort manager Andy caught the bug a few years back. \u00a0He&#8217;s been chasing backcountry certifications to help keep himself out of danger while hunting down fresh lines. Here is what he puts into his pack for\u00a0a typical day of splitboarding.<\/p>\n<p><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong><u> Packing to Survive:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22038 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tickettoridegroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ortovox-beacon-program_h.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"889\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ortovox-beacon-program_h.jpg 889w, https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ortovox-beacon-program_h-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ortovox-beacon-program_h-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 889px) 100vw, 889px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Knowledge:<\/strong>\u00a0before you even pack your bag you should have a good understanding of the zone you plan to shred. \u00a0 You need to know the avalanche forecast, the weather forecast. \u00a0It&#8217;s also important to have some training on how to use all of your gear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Your pack:\u00a0<\/strong>Something large enough to comfortably hold everything you decide you need. \u00a0I use the Dakine Blade. It&#8217;s got a hefty 38L volume to hold all my goodies and, as it\u2019s \u00a0Dakine bag, it&#8217;s more durable than you would believe .<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Avalanche Rescue Gear:<\/strong> Shovel, transceiver and probe are the absolute minimum you should. \u00a0Yes, that&#8217;s even if it\u2019s just for a quick rip outside the boundary of your local resort. Make sure you have them easily accessible and lots of practice in using them. I use BCA gear, their tracker 3 beacon and a shovel that can be converted into a hoe for quick digging. \u00a0I also have a 230cm probe for the rocky mountain snowpack .<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22041 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tickettoridegroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SNBP-140900-SAFE-06-HR-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SNBP-140900-SAFE-06-HR-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SNBP-140900-SAFE-06-HR-600x400-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Emergency Communication Device: <\/strong>Your cell phone is probably not going to cut it if you need help. Depending on where I am I carry a radio or a Spot satellite messenger. Not only does the spot messenger use satellites to send out a distress signal, it can also send preset messages to saved numbers. \u00a0You can even ask your partner to start dinner!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Skins and Poles:<\/strong>\u00a0You need to get up the hill before you can rip down. A well looked after set of skins will help you climb with ease. \u00a0 Poles will also make it way more efficient. I use black diamond Z compactor poles that I can easily stash in my pack when I&#8217;m not using them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hats:\u00a0<\/strong>I usually take a beanie for the ride down, but as I get pretty sweaty on the way up there is usually a mesh back hat in my bag to keep me cool. Luckily TTR has a great stock of these hats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Snow Saw:<\/strong>\u00a0I carry a lightweight BCA saw for doing snowpack tests before dropping. \u00a0It\u2019s also super handy if you ever need to build a shelter or chop firewood.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22040 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tickettoridegroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2013-09-27-at-9.47.12-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"659\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2013-09-27-at-9.47.12-PM.png 659w, https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2013-09-27-at-9.47.12-PM-300x197.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Eye Wear: <\/strong>Keep your eyes protected with a pair of sunnies for the hike up so you don\u2019t get too sweaty. \u00a0Also carry some goggles to keep all that pow out of your face on your way down. The Spy Happy lens make everything look way sharper so I use their Helm glasses and I carry a pair of Doom goggles with an extra lens in case conditions change quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Layers:<\/strong>\u00a0Even the best meteorologist is often wrong so be prepared for anything. No matter how warm it is, I always take a packable puffy jacket and 3 sets of gloves; lightweight park gloves, full winter gloves and a toasty mitten. All three pairs are leather as it\u2019s the best for durability and waterproofing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Snow study kit:\u00a0<\/strong>Not essential but I love nerding out on snow crystals when stopping for lunch or a quick breath on the way up!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First aid kit:<\/strong> I keep a small one in a waterproof bag just in case. \u00a0Most of the gear I take is geared towards snowboard specific injuries like sprains and breaks. Things like triangle bandages also make good emergency binding straps and tie downs for a makeshift shelter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fire starter kit:<\/strong>\u00a0Super essential if you get stuck out longer than expected. There&#8217;s nothing better than a spring time backcountry cook out as well, provided you\u2019re not in a national park.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Toilet paper:\u00a0<\/strong>You never know when nature will call and there are no leaves on the trees in the winter. TP also doubles as part of my fire starter kit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22033 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tickettoridegroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Avalanche-sign.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Avalanche-sign.jpg 720w, https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Avalanche-sign-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Compass and a map:<\/strong>\u00a0It may seem a bit excessive if you are on home turf but these items are super lightweight. \u00a0It&#8217;s good practice to whip\u00a0them out on occasion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ropes:<\/strong> I usually carry a few 2m prussic cords, 5mm in width, endless use for these.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Duct Tape:<\/strong>\u00a0I keep a small roll in the pack and it&#8217;s\u00a0worth its weight in gold when something goes wrong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Water:<\/strong>\u00a0I tend to be a bit skint taking water out into the backcountry, usually I will only take about a litre with me. \u00a0That said, I do load up on a huge amount in the morning before setting out and I keep a large bottle in the car for when I get back. If I need more the fire starter kit can come out to melt snow into some tasty drinking water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Snacks:<\/strong> Probably the\u00a0most important item in my\u00a0pack, I try to go as gourmet as possible. \u00a0There&#8217;s nothing like whipping out some fancy cheese after a heavy ascent to get your spirits up! I always have about twice as much food as I need, just in case. Any day trip we take out of the Lake Louise area always starts with a trip to Lagan\u2019s bakery. \u00a0There, we stock up on chewy snacks like brownies as they won&#8217;t freeze and get brittle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22035 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tickettoridegroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_8155-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_8155-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_8155-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tickettoridegroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_8155-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Figuring out your backcountry gear list is going to be entirely up to you and your specific needs. \u00a0Mix it up and find what works for you and your crew but feel free to use this as a starting place.
