Hi all and welcome one more time, back to J-Bay<\/p>\n

Time flies when you’re having fun, and our time in Jeffrey’s Bay sure seems to have done just that.<\/p>\n

The weekend was slow and relaxed. There wasn’t too much swell around town, and with all the locals all off work, we stuck to free surfing Kitchen Windows. It wasn’t all surfing though. Not to forget that there is some serious work that still needs to be done in order to get our crew fit and ready for their assessments in Durban. On Saturday we ran through a few lifeguarding games and exercises to get everyone started, followed by the infamous run-swim-run.<\/p>\n

On Sunday we continued with our fitness regime, but decided to take the afternoon to explore a bit o the area and find some new surf spots. Our scouting took us into the evening hours and before long it was time for us to be heading back to the hostel for some dinner.<\/p>\n

On Monday we met up with Etienne again for another lesson at Kitchens. The waves were epic!! A perfect little swell had hit the coast and, together with the off-shore breeze, Kitchens was looking good! The guys surfed all morning as wave after waves kept rolling through. After the lesson Etienne took some of the guys to look for some new boards. Seb traded in his 6”2 for a more slender model, while Neil and Ruaridh both swapped their mini mals or shortboards. Unfortunately the good conditions from the morning didn’t carry on into the afternoon so there was no chance to give the new boards a test run. Tomorrow looks like it good be a good day though.<\/p>\n

Later that day we met up with Dale from the J-Bay surf school to help him out with a community project they call the Joshua Project. This project was setup a few months ago as an initiative to get the street kids of J-Bay out of their harsh environments and into sports as an alternative to street-life. The project has been a great success with many of the kids involved becoming regulars. Our crew arrived on a day when Dale was teaching the kids about water safety and how to respond to an emergency situation on the beach. Everybody got involved doing emergency scenarios and rescue techniques.<\/p>\n

This morning the crew are out doing another community project with Alison Kuhl from the Supertubes foundation. The Supertubes foundation was setup by one of J-Bay’s local surfers as a means to look after and rescue indigenous vegetation from development. At the moment, the major drought in the area has been cause for concern as there have been water restrictions imposed on the town so the foundation are unable to water or maintain the plants so our guys are helping out by making awareness signs out of recycled materials. But more on all that next time. Till then…<\/p>\n
