The past few days have been a real mix of activity here in SA with a great deal of improvisation going on due to the weather.

On Friday we spent the day in Durban. In the morning the guys had their life saving assessment at uShaka with Deon. This part of the course requires riders to display their skills and knowledge on how to handle an emergency situation, from removing a patient from potential hazards to performing CPR and other vital procedures. The group split up into two’s. Each pair had to show Deon that they were capable of recognising and dealing with a certain emergency situation. They were then quizzed on different scenarios and asked how they would react to a particular incident.

The water-work portion of the assessment needed to be postponed due to adverse sea conditions so we decided to do something a little different, something our British crew could relate to. We made our way to KZN Action Soccer for a little game of Indoor Football. Now it doesn’t take much to persuade 12 lads to join a game so we hired out a court for the afternoon and got stuck right in. After an exhausting session playing football it was back to Ballito to enjoy another classic dinner and collapse on a sofa.

The weather did us no favours on Saturday. The wind and the rain howled through and there was just no way any of our planned activities were going to fly. Our intended Skydiving afternoon had to be postponed as well as the paintballing game. Fortunately though, the weather didn’t get us too down. It ended up being a great chance to relax and enjoy a little downtime and with a few classic James Bond movies on TV, there was no need to go anywhere.

A couple of the guys used the time to get stuck into their new boards. Jonny, Steve, Jonty and Pat have decided to give board shaping a go with Mike from the Secret Spot. There is a very delicate process involved so they’ve spent quite some time in the shaping bay smoothing and sanding their new boards. It’s early days yet, but the boards are looking good and will be ready for glassing soon.

Yesterday we got off to a relaxed start – some of us anyway. The weather had finally cleared and it looked like it was going to be a classic day. I gathered together my Skydiving crew and we made our way out to the airport. On the way we met up with one of my good friends Martin from Project O whose organisation looks after AIDS orphans in the Inanda valley. Martin also holds the Guiness World Record for 6 skydives, on 6 continents in 6 days so he’s an interesting guy to have around when you’re about to take the plunge yourself. We got to the hanger in time to check in and do the briefing before the guys boarded their plane. You’d expect that if you took off in a plane, you should touch down in a plane – not today! From a dizzy height of around 12 000ft, Chris, Steve and Alex decided they’d try their luck with gravity and piled out of the plane like lemmings off a cliff. It was a classic jump, which yielded some interesting video footage, but once safely back on the ground, it was all smiles for our lot.

On the way back we decided to take the long way home so we meandered through the mountain passes on our way to the coast, stopping every now and then for a photo of the view. It was a good way to spend the day, and we decided to top it off with just one more James Bond film before heading to bed.

This morning the guys are out with Deon doing their final practical assessments, but more on that next time

Till then

Take care
Bevan and Nikki

Hi all Welcome back to Ballito.
