Well hello there,<\/p>\n

Tuning in for another blog from our TTRide September trip. I am realising that this time of year is well… EPIC in South Africa. It may not the hottest, but in terms of good weather to wave ratio it is pretty damn good. With Cape Town being my hometown I definitely have a bias towards it, but we did have a really good stay there. There is so much to do there that it is always tricky to decide what to do when, but we got it all in.<\/p>\n

Firstly on the surfing note, of course, the waves throughout our Cape Town stay were very great. It is a funny thing as the group of course don't know anything else, but for me who has surfed here for 18 years and run trips for 5, I know when a group gets lucky! Muizenberg is where we are based and where we do most of our surf lessons, and is one of the best waves for learning to surf so it is great for the group. One of the things I love about Muizenberg is that it is really considered a beginner wave and many surfers would not be seen dead there, but on one day when the group were doing a lesson there were a bunch of the local kids (mostly African kids by the way) who were doing the most ground-breaking state of the art airs and surfing at this 'beginner wave'. I don't know where this is going, but their surfing was incredible and would open a lot of eyes around the world!<\/p>\n

The group's surfing has improved really well and everyone bought boards, either new or second hand. With these new boards we could head over to Long Beach, Kommetjie to get a sample of the Atlantic ocean. Long Beach is the step-up wave after Muizenberg but it runs into Krans which one of Cape Town's better barelling waves which means if you end up in the wrong spot it aint so fun! The guys did really well in 2m waves and it was a great learning experience. The water is a lot colder on that side of the peninsula and the waves are significantly more powerful!<\/p>\n

With good surf under the belt everyon's arms were ready to fall off so we decided to give them a break and go and see the penguins at boulders and go wine tasting. Penguins are just ridiculous creatures, they are like birds but they swim like fish? They do well on land and spend most of their time there, but definitely look more at home when swimming and you can see that this is where they would do their hunting. Wine tasting on the other hand was an entirely different affair. Klein Constantia is a historic wine estate, and does some fantastic wines, especially whites and its world famous Vin de Constance dessert wine. Although many in the group were not 'wine drinkers' everyone got involved and enjoyed tasting the wines leading to several of the group buying a bottle or two to take up the coast. <\/p>\n

Tim Conibear hails from Cornwall and used to do my job running trips but found his heart lay more with helping to uplift the communities in South Africa and dedictates his time to that these days. We got our group and his together (similar ages) to do a fun educational lesson where Tim helps educate about drugs, AIDS, and crime whilst teaching them to surf and learn important skills such as lifesaving and communication across cultural boundaries. In the township itself TTRide has built a good relationship with Thomas the football coach and have supported his juniors for years now. The group went and joined in a coaching session and when it came to game time our guys got properly beaten by a group of very talented kids. <\/p>\n

Heritage day and National Braai (barbecue) day here in South Africa so I gotta go put some steaks and boerewors on the braai. Enjoy the pics!<\/p>\n
