What to Expect

Spend each day focussing on nothing other than taking your riding to the next level - how rad is that?! Ticket to Ride make sure that the only thing on your mind is how to tighten your tweak, improve your switch stance, and nail your powder descent. You will train up to Level 1 standard, and walk away with an internationally recognised qualification having taken your riding to the next level, and given yourself an awesome base to continue progressing.

  • 20 hours of coaching a week
  • Video analysis
  • Teaching theory coaching
  • Exam preparation
  • Breakfast seven days a week and tasty home cooked meals five nights a week
  • Twin share accommodation

You should fly into Auckland before the start of the course, or on the course start date. A Ticket To Ride Representative will be at Auckland airport all day on Friday 12th July. We will provide accommodation overnight on Friday in Auckland as the transfer to Ohakune leaves at 9:00 the following morning. You will arrive in Ohakune to get settled into your accommodation around 15:00 on Saturday 13th July.

On departure, there will be a transfer from Ohakune back to Auckland provided for those who need it, but it is up to you to book your return flights at a sensible time either late on Sunday 11th August, or on Monday 12th August. If you need to stay overnight in Auckland then we recommend the BASE backpackers in central Auckland as it is close to the bus stop, but it is up to you to book this yourself. You could also get a bus down to Wellington and continue travelling around this beautiful country!

To get ahead of the Northern Hemisphere's winter season and pursue your dream job as a snowboard instructor by passing the Level 1 qualification.

We get a healthy mix of people from across the globe and locally from within NZ. It’s always a good group of people motivated to progress their riding and have a great time in the process.

We generally say you need at least five weeks of mountain experience, be comfortable on a European Red Run, and be able to ride switch.

You will need to fly into Auckland International Airport, please contact us for advice on arrival times. We can organise a night in town for you so that you can catch the bus to Ohakune in good time the next day.

It is recognised worldwide, so is a great one to take to other countries.

On our four week course this is not an option but if you would like to stay on and get work experience, then we suggest you have a look at our Level 2 course.

You will not need a working visa to take the course, and most countries are exempt from needing a visitor visa. View the full list here:

If you want to work there, then the working holiday visa scheme in New Zealand is easy! Applications should be made directly through the NZ immigration department rather than dealing with a visa organisation. You can apply for a 12 or 23 month visa.

The accommodation is 17 km/s from the base of the lift, about a 20 minute drive on a good weather day. Transport will leave from the lodge.

Mt Ruapehu is split into two resorts, Turoa and Whakapapa. On the course you get a pass for Turoa, there's always the option to head to Whakapapa for the day.

Having travelled extensively around New Zealand, and skied all the different areas over our years operating and instructing there, we just picked the best ski resort to be based in! Queenstown has the reputation but mainly with backpackers and casual season workers from around the world, especially the UK and Canada. Mt Ruapehu is much more the authentic Kiwi experience, and where the locals choose to ski. It is a bigger area, quieter on the slopes, with a longer season and a lot more snow-sure. The runs are longer and steeper, the backcountry is better, we could go on! It is also closer to travel from the town of Ohakune to the ski slopes (around 15 mins), whereas being based in Queenstown, the closest ski area is around 30 minutes drive away!
