Costa Rica is now up there with one of those places you have to tick off your surf travel lists! It’s a must visit location with warm water, beautiful tropical backdrop and laidback atmosphere. It’s the perfect place for European Surfers to escape the harsh winter to warmer Surfing perfection!
Ticket to Ride has been travelling through Costa Rica for years trying to find the perfect destination along with hosting the best waves for our Riders. After all this traveling we decided to base ourselves in Santa Teresa, which is in the area of “Mal Pais” offering the ideal Surfing set up for your adventure!
Santa Teresa Beach Break

Wave Quality – World Class
Experience – All levels of Surfers
Type – Beach Break
Direction – Goes both right and left with sand/rock bottom
This is the main break you’ll be surfing with Ticket to Ride and offering a variety of waves for all surfers. The beach is about 2miles long and has your own choice of peaks to choose from. On a solid southerly swell it can offer punchy barrels with really fun walls running in on to the inside. Being the early riser will pay off in this part of the world as its mostly dead calm with clean conditions in the mornings with trade onshore winds kicking in around the afternoon then dying off into the evening. Dawny with your mates followed by banana pancakes and fresh coffee is a must here!
Super Suck “Suckies”

Wave Quality – World Class
Experience – Intermediate/Advanced
Type – Reef
Direction – Right
You’ll never get bored of the waves on Playa Santa Teresa but if you’re looking for something to get your Surfing senses tingling then you only have to travel to the north end of the beach. Suckies is an unforgiving intense wave that on its day will see you being spat out of a Costa Rica pit. It’s not for the faint hearted but can give you one of the waves of your life when the swells just right.
On top of all of this you have a host of secret spot littered around the area. Treat the locals with respect and maybe they’ll take you surfing to a little unknown beauty!
