#TTRIDECR Group 2 arrived safely on Friday afternoon into Alajuela and after a couple of hour taxi-ride through the awesome mountains and a beautiful ferry ride across the peninsular, everyone was surfing 2-3ft perfect Santa Teresa peaks in shorts and rash vests. Now that’s how you #escapewinter!

The first sunset surf was followed by a beach BBQ, some truly tropical cocktails, complimented by great live music. Frothing for the dawn offshore wind and perfect surfing conditions, I loosely suggested an ‘early’ and if they wanted could meet me in the water as I would be in at 6am…

Well for the first time this trip I slept past 7am and groggily greeted Miguel, Victoria and Ramune, who instead of sporting puffy eyes due to too much sleep, were wearing massive grins and were showing the first signs of sunburn across their noses! Good work Guys. This has set the tone for fortnight ahead…

After everyone loving the last Cabo Blanco Island fishing and snorkel trip, on Sunday we decided to go with the local fisherman again, with the aim of beating our last catch (of one Tuna) and some anticipation about hopefully seeing some beautiful sea creatures.

We definitely weren’t disappointed and maybe even a little scared, or at least yours truly felt pretty vulnerable. After ignoring the heaps of fish of all colours of the rainbow jumping around and swimming erratically I ungracefully flopped off the side of the boat just as the other side was greeted by a school of Fresher Sharks – explaining the behavior of said beautiful fish. All was well though, our captain explained how they are harmless so after a good fifteen minutes of pretending to be fascinated by the parrot fish and such, we got back on the boat and headed off to find out 3kg black fin Tuna.

This is where the trip got seriously awesome. That word gets used so much but this was so so good! Whilst some how managing to catch 3 huge fish of some sort (see pics) and A MACKEREL, we saw countless Manta Rays flying through the air, Whales flipping their tales and Dolphins swam right by the boat. We also swam through the bubbles of the live submerged volcano, which was even more beautiful in the 5pm glassy conditions.

The Fish caught has lasted the past three days, fuelling and refueling days of surfs. Everyone’s surfing really well and yoga with Sandy is helping to build strength for the mammoth surfs. The one word that has been branded around the most (mainly by  Mig) sums up the past few days – perfect, with the exception of everyone suffering from dreaded surfers rash of course. Such hard times at TTRideCR Surf Camp…

So we caught a Tuna! Yep – within 5 minutes of casting off, we were reeling in a nice sized black fin Tuna, which we whetted our appetite for the evening by eating raw with lime and balsamic right on the boat. Proper Costa Rican style ceviche.

The rest of the day consisted of swimming through a live submerged volcano and amongst thousands of beautiful Finding Nemo style fish. We all really felt a million miles away from civislation for a few hours as the nearest visible shore is Cabo Blanco National Park, so not a sole in sight and no one but the birds and fish joined us at Cabo Blanco. This feeling was amplified on our way home when we were joined by a school of humpback wales!

Such a peaceful day and beautiful way to spend the day without having to endure hours of travel, or hoards of tourists. Getting back and cooking our catch of the day (as well as a Mahi Mahi we bought) on the BBQ and eating it with a couple of cold Imperials, then being told the waves for the week are set to pump was the icing on the cake…

We are currently pretty surfed out and awaiting the new TTRide CR arrivals on Friday. Will update when everyone has touched down safe and sound.

Escaping the winter in the UK to sunny Costa Rica is a no brainer when you have pumping clean waves, never ending sunshine and a whole host of activities on offer.
