Costa Rica is much more than a hakuna matata surfer’s paradise; it’s also a legend and pioneer of green energy. The safest Central American country has generated 100 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources for the past 116 days and counting…
Super clean Costa Rica is aiming to go a whole year running on 100-percent renewable energy, beating it’s impressive effort of 99 percent last year according to the Costa Rican Electricity Institute.
Costa Rica has a beautifully unique climate and terrain so the majority of the renewable energy comes from hydropower, due to the large river system and heavy tropical rainfalls. There is also a possible 4383 sunshine hours (12 a day), so solar power contributes heavily. As do wind, biomass, and geothermal energy sources.
According to Tree Hugger, our favourite Central American country aims to be free from fossil fuels in just five years. Now that’s Pura Vida and just one more reason to go on a surf trip to Costa Rica this year!
