The past week has been a pretty incredible week of surf right here in the UK. The Ticket to Ride office has been a little emptier than usual, mainly because the past week has been filled with bright sunshine, a run of pretty perfect swell blessed by a beautiful offshore breeze. It doesn't get much better than that.
Spring is a great time to be a surfer in the UK, the clocks have gone back meaning that you can get the 2 tide sessions in one day, the water is warming up and the swell is still nice and consistent.
Looking back on the past few months, UK surfers should have atleast one classic winter session to think back to and smile. That day, the really cold one, when you braved it and most importantly scored it.
As wetsuits improve the level of bravery required to surf in the UK in the depths of winter is constantly reduced. Having said this, when it'scold, it's cold. Changing in a frosty carpark into a wet wetsuit, no matter how good it is, required a sond level of commitment.
As we think back over winter, the video below, pays tribute to the surfers up in the north east of Britain, home to some of the coldest and best waves that I have ever surfed.
Thank you winter, thank you wetsuits.
Roll on spring, and then comes summer!!
Julian is back from sunny Costa Rica and will be opening the Ticket to Ride Surf School in Perranporth over Easter and then fully opening in May. Bookings are right up, summer 2012 is gearing up to be a classic!!!
