In our last week in Tofo we had a few fun days at Tofino point. It was clean and the waves were 2-3 foot. We also had two fairly big days, where the point was 4-5 foot and a lot of hard work. The guys had a lot of paddling to do to stay in place and of cause just trying to paddle into these faster waves can get you tired quickly. Those afternoons we went down to Dinos beach break where the waves were still good size, but a little easier to surf. Chris and josh had a few good rides, working on using the whole wave and cutting back when needed. Nicola the smallest of the group had a surf where she just couldn’t get out, but didn’t just give up and kept trying. The next surf she made it out in a breeze and got a cooker of a wave. Unfortunately Manuela hurt her toe, but had got some fun waves before at dinos, yet still a little bummed she was out the water for a few days. Fortunately she filmed the guys at any given chance.

The group are all surfing their new boards which they got at the end of the Durban part of the trip and are loving the new challenge and quick response from their boards.

One of the days we took a drive along some sandy roads to try and find the “African Kirra”, and we stumbled upon it. It wasn’t working as we hoped, but was still very awesome to watch the waves reeling down the sand bar for 400m. It was super fast, so we just had lunch and watched it for a few hours. It was a fun 4×4 drive and epic day to see a new place and enjoy the environment.

While in Tofo we do yoga at Turtle cove, it has a yoga studio that has a few different yoga instructors doing different types of yoga every day of the week. We joined the breathing class where its a lot lighter stretches, but teaches you focus and join breath on every movement to get focus. It was an awesome class and everyone really enjoyed it. We got super loose and ready for a great surf that afternoon. We also went that evening to Dinos night bar, it was a house party theme. It is situated right on the beach and has an awesome dance floor. We spent our last day in Tofo on the beach just surfing a long board we borrowed from Turtle cove. We swam and relaxed, absorbing the sun and enjoying our last day in paradise. A few of the group went and bought some gifts for home and souvenirs of Mozambique. We also did our last drive to Inhambane market where we saw some nice paintings and hand made items. Chris was brave and tried a chilli. He likes his hot foods.

We packed our bags and were all very excited for the drive to Ponta d' Ouro, we were sad to say bye to Tofo as its been an awesome stay, but its always good to see something new. We said our goodbyes to the staff at Turtle Cove and headed on the road to Maputo for the night. It was a relaxed drive and it went smoothly, stopping once in a town called Xai Xai for a snack and got back on route to Casa Lisa where we would be spending the night. On arrival we all had a warm shower and were very amped for our 3 course meal. We went to bed early and woke up early to beat the traffic in Maputo. Once we were through Maputo its sand road for 4 hours. We slipped into 4×4 and made our way to Ponta. The drive was super fun, there had been a little rainfall that morning and the night before so it was quite muddy and there were some deep puddles, but that was nothing for our Toyota land cruiser.

We got into Ponta that morning at 8:30 and checked into Kaya Kweru, which is our accommodation for the next 3 days. The group was super amped to see what Ponta had on offer.

I asked Manuela what she thought of the drive to Ponta and how she has been finding Mozambique

Manuela: “The drive to Ponta was a fun experience on the sand roads. It was a really bumpy ride and the car had to drive through large puddles that covered the car and trailer in mud. When driving we saw lots of beautiful scenery. The overnight stay at Casa Lisa was great, the food there is amazing and was well received. Mozambique as a whole has been a really relaxed place with lots of waves and nice people. It is truly a tropical paradise. I have enjoyed the sun and having a good time with friends.”

In search of the African Kirra the group went off-road and found the famous wave. Reeling down the point it was amazing to watch, but the 1 metre walls too small to surf.
