3 Apr 2027 3 Weeks Mid Level,Shredder Split Payment Options Trips from £2495

Overview

Explore undiscovered surf spots in enigmatic Mozambique!

Our three-week road trip is designed to unlock the untapped magic of Mozambique. For travelling surfers, it really is heaven on earth, home to world-class tropical waves, empty coastlines, and a unique rhythm of life that stays with you long after you’ve left.

South African surfers have long spoken about the perfect sand-bottom point breaks scattered along this coastline, and as exploration has grown, so has the discovery of incredible new waves. More recently, a wave known as “The African Kirra” took the surfing world by storm, but it is just one of many breaks we have been quietly exploring for years.

On this trip, time slows down. You will slip into the rhythm of African life, surfing when the waves are on, exploring when curiosity calls, and unwinding in a hammock when it is time to rest.

If your travel time is limited, get in touch with us directly about a shorter “fly in fly out” option.

Trip Timeline

Here you'll find a day by day breakdown of your course.

  • Arrive in South Africa

Arrive in Durban and settle in for your first night at Ansteys Beach Backpackers. Take time to relax after your journey, meet the group, and prepare the vehicles and trailer for your departure to Mozambique the following morning.

  • Welcome to Mozambique

Kick things off with an early start as you head for the Kosi Bay border crossing into Mozambique. Once across, continue on to the laid-back coastal town of Ponta do Ouro, soaking up the changing scenery along the way. You’re finally in Mozam - time to get stoked, breathe in that ocean air, and settle into the rhythm of the coast. Expect around 6 hours of driving today.

  • Head North to Chidenguele

Leaving Ponta do Ouro, you’ll head north towards Chidenguele, with plenty of wild coastline and rural Mozam scenery along the way. Arriving in time for sunset, kick back, take it all in, and tuck into some seriously good Mozambican food. Expect around 6 hours of driving today.

  • Surf in Tofo

Today you’ll reach your first major surf stop of the trip, Tofo Beach. Settle into the local vibe, explore the markets, and get familiar with the waves - an incredible point break alongside a super fun beach break. When you’re not surfing, there’s the option to head out on a boat trip to Pansy Island, a remote sandbank known for its unique shells and crystal-clear water.

  • Pomene and Beyond

Continue north to Pomene, one of Mozambique’s best-kept hidden gems. This is where the trip really goes off the map -raw, remote, and seriously wild, with sand tracks and endless empty coastline. Be prepared for a proper adventure as you arrive in one of the most untouched spots on the journey. Expect around 3–4 hours of driving from Tofo to Pomene.

Here you’ll surf an incredible right-hand sand point break and unwind with sunsets over endless palms and mangroves, soaking up the calm, untouched beauty of the coast.

  • Journey Back to South Africa

It’s time to begin the journey back to South Africa. Along the way, you’ll pass back through Chidenguele and Ponta do Ouro, where we’ll usually spend two nights and squeeze in one last surf session in Mozam.

From there, head back to Durban for a final dinner together, sharing memories from what will truly be a trip of a lifetime.

Let’s not sugar-coat it, this is a proper road trip. You’ll be covering about 1,155 km of African coastline between Durban and Pomene… and then doing it all again on the way back. We will have playlists at the ready!

The first two days are the big ones, with around 6 hours of driving each day. After that, things ease up a bit with a cruisier 4-hour journey to Tofo, where you can finally swap the car seat for a surfboard and enjoy the amazing waves on offer.

From Tofo to the wonderfully off-grid Pomene, it’s about 3–4 hours, with a fair chunk on sandy tracks, consider it part of the adventure.

The golden rule? Enjoy the ride. This isn’t just about getting from A to B, the views are half the experience. Keep an eye out the window and you might spot some incredible wildlife. Past trips have included giraffes, zebras… and yes, even a lion.
