Overview

Experience the South West and the East Coast of Sri Lanka on this unique two week Coast to Coast Surfari.

On this peaceful yet packed surf trip we spend a week of intense surf coaching at the Ticket to Ride Surf House in Ahangama on the South West Coast of Sri Lanka, followed by a week on the East Coast honing our surfing skills on the world famous right hand point breaks of Arugam Bay.

What to Expect

The South West Coast has an array of waves ranging from fun beach breaks, long left hand reefs, short fast rights and everything in between. Arugam Bay is right hand point break heaven.

Trip Timeline

Here you'll find a day by day breakdown of your course.

  • Welcome to Sri Lanka

Upon arrival into CMB Airport you will jump in your transfer and head down to the Surf House. The journey takes around 2.5 hours including a stop halfway for some refreshments. At the Surf House you will check into your room and get settled, then there's a pre-trip briefing on the roof-top bar at sunset over a welcome drink, followed by the first curry of the trip and an early night ready for surfing the next day :)

  • 5 Day Surf Course

Our internationally acclaimed 5 day surf course starts on Sunday and finishes on Friday, with Wednesday off for rest. The course includes a mixture of in water surf lessons and guided surf sessions, 5 x surf theory / video analysis sessions, 5 x surf specific training classes, all surfing equipment and there is a maximum 5:1 student to instructor ratio.

A surfing day starts at 6am for coffee and fruit, then we load up the tuk tuks at 6:15am and head off to whatever break is suitable for you. The in-water surf lesson will last 2 hours, then we head back for breakfast for 9am. After breakfast you will go through surf theory and / or video analysis. Which option will be decided by the coach with regards to what will help your improvement. There is a small gap before surf specific training 11:30am – 12:30pm’ish.

You then have a break for lunch (not included but there are many options locally to suit all budgets and we have a fantastic cafe on site) then it’s time to go for a guided surf at 3:30pm, where you get the chance to practice what you have learned in the morning under the guidance of a surf instructor who will be present.

A little sundowner will happen just before dinner at 7pm and an early night ready to do it all again the next day. We take Wednesday off as a rest day and additional excursions / massages etc can be planned.

  • Head to Arugam Bay!

On the Saturday we will have breakfast at 9am (optional surf before if anyone's keen), then load up the van and take the 5 hour journey to the East Coast. Make sure the phone is charged up, not for doom scrolling, but taking pics as there's some great wildlife spotting along the way ;)

We will be greeted in A Bay by our partner Fawas of SAFA Surf Camp and his team where we will have a welcome dinner and an early night ready for a very early surf the next day...

  • Surf, stretch, explore.

The week in Arugam Bay will be spent getting up early for sunrise surfs (you'll get used to a 4:15am alarm, we promise) and lazy days spent at the beach front surf camp. Our excursions to the national park and lagoon tour are usually at the end of the week when everyone's shattered, but the waves dictate the program :)

  • Farewell A Bay

There will be three airport transfer including in the trip for the journey home. The journey is long around 7 hours so book your flight or onward travel for a reasonable hour so you don't miss out. Booking a late flight, or really early Sunday morning flight will give you the most time in Sri Lanka.

FAQs

Got a question about this course? Here's the best place to start. If you don't find your answer here, you can request a callback or get in touch using our contact page.

Everyone traveling to Sri Lanka must have visa. The system is undergoing a change at the time of writing and you can only get a visa upon arrival.

No you don't. But. Before you leave for Sri Lanka, please go and see either your local GP or travel surgery and explain where you are going, so that you can be vaccinated accordingly. It is important to do this is good time and we would suggest sorting this 3 or 4 weeks before you leave. For more information, please check out the following websites:

Fit for Travel - www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk and The World Health Organisation – www.who.int.

Whilst there are no mandatory vaccination requirements for Sri Lanka. However, the following vaccinations are suggested: Typhoid (monovalent), Polio, Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Rabies. The health risks in Sri Lanka are different to those encountered in Europe and North America. Watch out for bowel diseases such as diarrhoea and amoebic dysentery, vector borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever, and a variety of fungal infections. Sri Lanka’s physicians are very experienced in dealing with locally occurring diseases.

In Ahangama you will stay at the Ticket to Ride Surf House in either a private or twin / double room. i Arugam Bay you will stay at our partner Surf Camp - Safa Surf Camp, in private or twin / double shared cabanas, right on the beach.

If you arrive at an awkward time or just want to maximise your time in Sri Lanka you can arrange your own transfers no worries, the two best options are:

1. Book a transfer as you arrive at the airport - there's a transfer desk run by a government approved agency and the prices are fixed so there's no haggling.

2. Uber! Yes there's Uber in Sri Lanka and it works great.

Yes. There is a lot of surfing involved and time spent in the water. Whils you may not be able to surf at home, ensuring that you're in above average shape will mean you'll hit the ground running and your level of surfing will improve rapidly. If you aren't in the best shape you will be as fit as a fiddle at the end of the trip!

This depends on your spending habits. You can grab a local lunch of rice and curry for £1.50, and a lion beer cost around the same, but you can also indulge in foreign food which will cost between £4 - £20 and a fancy margerita will set you back between £6 - £11.
